Iolani Palace is one of Hawaii's most treasured sites and the only royal residence in the United States. The palace was once home to the last two Hawaiian monarchs. King Kalakaua and Queen Lili’uokalani, the last monarchs of Hawaii. It is a beautiful specimen of late Victorian architecture with a modernist style of decoration. The Palace is open to the public as a historic house museum as well as for special events.
Iolani Palace offers guided tours that explain the history of Hawaii’s last monarch. Visitors can learn about the palaces grounds, gardens and architecture, as well as its role in Hawaiian history. The palace also has a beautiful chapel that was built for Queen Lili’uokalani’s coronation in 1891.
The Palace grounds are filled with lush tropical vegetation, which contains many endemic Hawaiian plants. There is also a large pond with two koi fish that were a gift from Japan to the Kingdom of Hawaii in the late 1800s.
